The Influx of Immigrants into Chicago Surges, Exceeding 15,000
The southern border crisis has reached new heights in Chicago, with over 15,000 immigrants arriving in the city. Since Saturday, a staggering 27 buses have transported asylum-seekers, including hundreds who arrived on seven buses just yesterday.
Relocating Immigrants to Permanent Lodgings
As the number of immigrants continues to rise, Chicago is making preparations to relocate more than 1,600 individuals from police stations and airports to more permanent shelters. To assist with this massive undertaking, Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson has approved a $29.4 million contract with private security firm GardaWorld Federal Services.
Defending the Decision
Mayor Johnson defended the decision to spend such a substantial amount, emphasizing that he will not tolerate any violation of human rights. He assured the public that thorough conversations have taken place with GardaWorld, considering all allegations and dynamics surrounding the contract.
Arrivals from Texas Cities
During Johnson’s press conference, three buses carrying approximately 50 people each arrived at the loading zone. These buses originated from Del Rio, El Paso, and Laredo, marking the first arrivals from El Paso since December 2022.
Temporary Placement in Police Stations
Since Saturday, immigrants have been dropped off at various police stations throughout Chicago while awaiting placement in one of the city’s 21 shelters. According to city data, as of the end of August, 1,576 immigrants were living in police stations, with an additional 418 sleeping at O’Hare International Airport.
Expediting the Relocation Process
When questioned about the deadline to move immigrants to permanent camps before winter, Mayor Johnson assured that the process is being expedited, with migrants being relocated to brick-and-mortar facilities.
A Sanctuary City’s Commitment
Mayor Johnson emphasized that Chicago is a sanctuary state, county, and city, highlighting the collective effort to address this dynamic situation. He acknowledged the political dynamics that have led to this moment and stressed the importance of everyone’s sacrifices to ensure the resettlement and comfort of immigrant families.
Protest and Backlash
In response to what they perceive as a lack of attention to the border crisis, Texas and Arizona have sent buses of immigrants to Democratic-run cities like Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York City. Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has personally overseen the transportation of nearly 42,000 immigrants across the United States since launching the “border bus mission” in April 2022.
In May, the announcement that $51 million in financial aid would be allocated from the budget surplus to address the influx of immigrants bused from Texas sparked significant backlash from Republicans.

Why did Chicago choose to partner with a private security firm for the relocation process of immigrants?
The majority of the immigrants arriving in Chicago have come from cities in Texas, including McAllen, Laredo, and Brownsville. These cities have been overwhelmed with the number of asylum-seekers and have been unable to adequately provide for them. As a result, they have sought assistance from other cities, including Chicago. Chicago, known for its historical role in immigration, has a strong tradition of welcoming those in need. However, the sudden influx of immigrants has put a strain on the city’s resources. Temporary holding facilities, such as police stations and airports, are not equipped to provide the necessary care and support for the immigrants. Therefore, the decision was made to relocate them to more permanent shelters. The contract with GardaWorld Federal Services was deemed necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the immigrants during their relocation process. The private security firm has experience in managing large-scale operations and has been involved in similar endeavors in the past. Under the contract, GardaWorld will be responsible for transporting the immigrants to the designated shelters, providing security at the facilities, as well as coordinating their needs for food, medical care, and other essential services. This partnership brings together the expertise of a private firm with the city’s commitment to human rights and humanitarian efforts. While Chicago is currently focused on addressing the immediate needs of the arriving immigrants, city officials are also working towards finding sustainable solutions. The long-term goal is to support the integration of these individuals into the local community, ensuring that they have access to education, employment opportunities, and healthcare services. The surge of immigrants into Chicago highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities on the frontlines of the immigration crisis. It is a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform and increased support from federal agencies to address the root causes of mass migration and provide adequate resources to affected communities. Despite the challenges, the influx of immigrants has also brought out the best in Chicago. Community organizations, faith-based groups, and volunteers have stepped up to provide support and assistance. Businesses and individuals have generously donated resources, including clothing, toiletries, and meals. Chicago remains committed to its legacy as a city of immigrants, embracing diversity and opening its arms to those who seek a better life. The city’s response to the recent surge of immigration serves as a testament to its resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to upholding human rights. As the influx of immigrants into Chicago continues, it is crucial for the city, state, and federal governments to work together to develop sustainable and comprehensive solutions. This requires not only addressing the immediate needs of the arriving immigrants but also tackling the underlying issues that drive mass migration. Only through collaboration and a shared commitment can we ensure a better future for both newcomers and the communities they join.Cooperation with Private Security Firm
