The Washington, D.C. metro area also ranks high, with ‌a quarter of its‍ employees working remotely, tying with the Seattle metro area.

Changing Remote Work Landscape

Some ⁣states have ‌seen​ significant shifts in ⁣remote work ‌percentages.⁤ Maryland, Connecticut, ‍Massachusetts, and‍ Illinois reported lower remote workers than the national average in 2019, but by 2022, they reported ​higher percentages than the national average of 15%. On the other hand, Idaho, Montana, South‍ Dakota, and Iowa had more remote workers than the average in ⁣2019 but dropped below the average last year.

Mississippi had the fewest remote workers at 5.5%, and its neighboring states‌ in the southeast also‍ reported fewer workers than the average.

Impact of Remote Work

Remote work has had a​ significant impact on commute time. Workers in the U.S. have ‍saved an average⁣ of 55 minutes per day, while across the 27 countries studied, the average savings​ amounted to‍ 72‍ minutes per day, according to a working‌ paper circulated by the National Bureau of⁤ Economic Research.
