A Majority of California Voters Oppose Cash Reparations for Descendants of Slaves
A California task force recently made a recommendation to pay cash reparations to descendants of slaves, but it seems that the majority of voters in the state are not in favor of this proposal. According to a Sunday poll from the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies, 59% of voters oppose cash payments to some black residents, with over 4 in 10 voters strongly opposed to the reparation plan.
Comprehensive Study and Policy Reforms
The report by the California Reparations Task Force, released at the end of June, was the result of multiple years of examining reparations for black residents. Created in 2020 by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), the panel conducted a two-year comprehensive study that detailed over 1,000 pages of findings. The study included various forms of discrimination and proposed cash payments as reparations, potentially amounting to millions for black residents.
“It speaks to the miseducation of most Americans when it comes to slavery and the impact that it had on this country and the impact that it still has on African Americans today,” said state Sen. Steven Bradford, who served on the task force.
Debates and Reasons for Opposition
Since the release of the report, debates have arisen regarding the payout method and the source of the money. State Sen. Bradford has proposed diverting 0.5% of the state’s annual budget to a $1.5 billion annuity, which would support reparation programs and gradually pay out descendants of slavery over time.
The recent survey asked voters in California to explain their reasons for rejecting cash reparations. The top two reasons selected were “it’s unfair to ask today’s taxpayers to pay for wrongs committed in the past” (chosen by 60% of respondents) and “it’s not fair to single out one group for reparations when other racial and religious groups have been wronged in the past” (chosen by 53% of respondents).
Despite the task force’s recommendation, it seems that the majority of California voters are opposed to cash reparations for descendants of slaves. The ongoing debates and differing opinions highlight the complexity of addressing historical injustices and finding a fair resolution.
