Explosion and Fire at ADM Facility in Illinois Injures Eight Employees
An explosion and fire at an Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) facility in Decatur, Illinois, sent shockwaves through the community on Sunday evening. The incident, which occurred at the east plant in the ADM processing complex, resulted in the injury of eight employees.
The explosion took place shortly after 7 p.m., causing a tower of smoke to billow into the air. Several employees were immediately transported to a hospital for treatment, as stated on ADM’s website.
Extent of Injuries Unknown
Battalion Chief Wade Watson from the Decatur Fire Department provided an update on Monday morning, revealing that the injuries sustained by the ADM workers were still being assessed. Six of the injured employees were taken from the scene by ambulance, while the severity of their injuries remained uncertain.

The fire department confirmed that the fire was under control, with a crew remaining on-site to monitor any potential hot spots. The cause of the explosion and fire is currently under investigation, and fortunately, nearby residents did not need to be evacuated.
ADM expressed uncertainty regarding the cause of the explosion, as captured in a video posted by WCIA-TV, which showed a massive plume of dark smoke rising above the facility.
While ADM had no additional information to share at the time, the company assured The Associated Press that an updated statement would be released on Monday morning.
This incident marks the second occurrence at the plant in less than a month. On August 28, two Decatur firefighters required hospital treatment after battling a large fire at the facility. The fire had originated in a processing tank and was spreading to adjacent tanks.
Located approximately 40 miles east of Springfield and 180 miles southwest of Chicago, Decatur serves as the home of ADM’s headquarters. The plant where the explosion occurred is responsible for manufacturing various products, and it employs over 4,000 workers, according to ADM’s website.
