COVID cancellations are back: Two CA high schools cancel football games.
California High Schools Cancel Football Games Due to COVID Cases
In the latest development of COVID measures affecting schools, two California high schools have made the difficult decision to cancel their upcoming football games. Esparto High School, located west of Sacramento, had to cancel its game scheduled for Friday due to six players testing positive for COVID and seven more players being out due to injuries. The district’s superintendent, Christina Goennier, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of students, stating that it is not only a moral obligation but also a legal and ethical responsibility.
“Ensuring the well-being of students is not only a moral obligation but also a legal and ethical responsibility.”
The decision to cancel the game was supported by Dr. Aimee Sisson, the local county health officer, who expressed the health department’s commitment to keeping schools open for in-person instruction while prioritizing safety. It remains uncertain whether the game will be rescheduled at a later date.
Similarly, Santa Paula High School, located north of Los Angeles, also had to cancel its Friday football game against La Cañada High School due to a significant outbreak of 20 positive COVID cases within the football and cheerleading teams. Students at Santa Paula High School expressed their understanding of the situation, acknowledging the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent the situation from worsening.
Amidst frustrations from some parents who feel their children are missing out after months of lockdowns, the Santa Paula Cardinals, the school’s football team, have been performing exceptionally well with a current ranking of 3-0 in the Citrus Coast high school football standings. However, the cancellation of the game could potentially disrupt their momentum.
COVID Impact on Schools and Beyond
These cancellations are not isolated incidents, as a third high school in Ojai, Nordoff High School, also had to cancel a football game earlier in the season due to COVID cases. The rise in COVID cases is a concern in various areas, including Los Angeles, where the percentage of cases has increased from 4% to 16% in just one week.
Furthermore, other schools across the country and even California employers have implemented new COVID restrictions. For example, a Maryland elementary school reinstated its face mask mandate after several students tested positive for COVID. In Atlanta, Morris Brown College implemented a two-week mask mandate despite having no active COVID cases on campus. Additionally, a major Hollywood movie studio, Lionsgate, temporarily reinstated its mask mandate for employees in its Santa Monica office after multiple positive cases were reported.
As the school year progresses, it is crucial for schools and organizations to adapt and prioritize the safety and well-being of their students and employees while navigating the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic.
