Disney has reportedly removed its claim against Governor DeSantis regarding free speech in their federal lawsuit.
Disney Claims Political Retaliation in Lawsuit Against Florida Governor
Disney has amended its federal lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, alleging that he politically retaliated against the company. The amended lawsuit focuses on this claim, dropping other allegations such as breach of contract and violation of due process rights. The revision has significantly reduced the size of the lawsuit compared to the original filing.
In response to the decision to drop certain claims, Disney stated that those issues are already being addressed in a separate state-level lawsuit. Governor DeSantis’s spokesperson welcomed Disney’s surrender on the dropped claims, while a Disney spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to defending its contracts and investing in Florida.
Earlier this year, Disney announced the cancellation of a billion-dollar office complex project, citing changing business conditions. The company’s decision came after Governor DeSantis stripped Disney of control over a special tax district that provided unique benefits to the company.
Disney’s ongoing feud with the governor has led to legal action, with the company suing the state of Florida, claiming it is a victim of government retaliation. Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted at the possibility of withholding development plans in response to the feud, questioning the state’s willingness to support further investment and job creation.
Despite the conflict, Disney’s theme park and consumer products chairman, Josh D’Amaro, confirmed the company’s plans to invest $17 billion in Walt Disney World and create 13,000 jobs over the next decade.
Disney’s Unpopularity with Republicans
While some Republicans have criticized Governor DeSantis for his battle with Disney, recent polling suggests that the company is not popular among Republican voters. According to a tweet by Giancarlo Sopo, 64% of Republicans view Disney negatively, highlighting the significant divide.
