Jim Jordan probes Jack Smith’s ‘unfair methods’ in Trump files lawsuit.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Demands Records from Special Counsel’s Office
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) is taking action after allegations of improper pressure surfaced in the case involving former President Donald Trump’s classified documents. Jordan has sent a letter to special counsel Jack Smith’s office, demanding records related to the incident.
Lawyer Stanley Woodward, who represents Walt Nauta, an aide to the former president charged alongside Trump, claimed that he felt coerced to cooperate with Smith’s office. Jordan cited these reports in his letter to Smith, expressing serious concerns about the tactics employed by the Office of the Special Counsel.
“This attempt to inappropriately coerce Mr. Woodward raises serious concerns about the abusive tactics of the Office of the Special Counsel,” Jordan wrote.
Woodward alleged that during a meeting last fall, the Justice Department’s chief of counterintelligence, Jay Bratt, brought up Woodward’s application for a judgeship. Prosecutors were trying to convince Woodward that Nauta had lied and should cooperate in the investigation. Jordan criticized Bratt’s actions, stating that they call into question the impartiality and mission of the Department.
In court filings, Woodward also mentioned another client, Mar-a-Lago IT worker Yuscil Taveras, who signed a ”non-prosecution” agreement with prosecutors. Taveras began working with Smith’s team after being informed that Woodward’s representation of both clients could create conflicting interests.
Taveras’s testimony led to a superseding indictment of Trump, Nauta, and a third co-defendant, Carlos de Oliveira, alleging their involvement in attempting to delete Mar-a-Lago security camera footage. Woodward filed a complaint against Smith’s team, claiming that the cooperation agreement was only offered to Taveras after he consulted with outside counsel.
Jordan has been actively sending letters to prosecutors regarding Trump and his allies in various criminal investigations. Recently, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis reprimanded Jordan for attempting to invoke congressional authority over her jurisdiction.
In his request for documents, Jordan seeks information related to Woodward’s discussions with prosecutors, as well as communications among senior DOJ officials regarding the attorney’s past and current clients involved in the government’s investigation.
Jordan has set a deadline of September 21 for Smith to provide the requested documents.
