Maryland elementary school reinstates mask requirement for children.
A Maryland Elementary School Reinstates Face Mask Mandate After COVID Outbreak
In response to several students testing positive for COVID, Rosemary Hills Elementary School in Maryland has decided to reinstate its face mask mandate. The school, located just north of Washington, D.C., is now requiring the third-grade class and school staff to wear masks for a period of 10 days. This decision comes after “three or more” third graders tested positive for the virus.

The mask mandate will be in effect for 10 days, after which masks will become optional again, according to Principal Rebecca Irwin Kennedy. The period ends on September 11, as confirmed by a school district spokesperson. Rosemary Hills Elementary, part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, is located in Silver Spring.
During this time, students and staff must wear masks, with the exception of when they are eating or drinking. The school is providing KN95 masks to students and staff in the affected classes or activities.
Parents will also receive at-home rapid COVID tests and are asked to report any positive results to the school attendance office. Principal Kennedy expressed gratitude for the support in taking these steps to ensure the health of staff and students.
Mask Mandates Resurfacing Elsewhere
Rosemary Hills Elementary is not the only institution reintroducing mask mandates this fall. Morris Brown College, a private historically black liberal arts school in Atlanta, implemented a two-week mask mandate due to positive cases among students in the Atlanta University Center system.
Similarly, a major Hollywood movie studio, Lionsgate, reinstated its mask mandate for most of its Santa Monica office employees after several positive cases were reported. The studio implemented contact tracing efforts and distributed free COVID test kits.
While the White House has not broadly recommended returning to mask mandates, the Biden administration has issued warnings about COVID as the colder months approach. The administration recently advised individuals to consider getting a COVID booster shot, as well as flu and RSV shots.
As we navigate these challenging times, it is important to prioritize the health and safety of our communities. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others.
