DeSantis insists men must ‘definitely’ support pregnant women.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Calls for Men to Provide Child Support to Pregnant Women
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is making waves with his pro-family campaign platform, as he voices his belief that men should be financially supporting pregnant women even before their child is born. In a recent interview with Fox News, DeSantis was asked about Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) legislation that aims to award child support payments to mothers during pregnancy.
While DeSantis did not explicitly state his support for Rubio’s legislation, he emphasized the importance of men stepping up and providing support to pregnant women. He expressed concern for women who feel like they have no other choice but to consider abortion due to lack of support.
“Most of these women do not want to have abortions, but they feel like they have no other options because they get no support,” DeSantis said. “And that’s because a lot of these men are nowhere to be found — they should absolutely be providing support; they should absolutely be held accountable.”
DeSantis’s stance on this issue aligns with his broader pro-life agenda. Under his leadership, Florida has expanded postpartum medical care for impoverished women to a full year after childbirth. Additionally, he has worked to increase opportunities for foster care and adoption.
DeSantis acknowledged that financial feasibility plays a significant role in a woman’s decision regarding pregnancy. When fathers fail to provide support, it can become overwhelming for women. He expressed sympathy for women facing such situations in Florida.
A Pro-Family Campaign Platform
These remarks are part of Gov. DeSantis’s pro-family campaign platform, which aims to support families in various ways. In a recent op-ed, he outlined his vision for an economy where families can thrive on a single income, emphasizing the importance of rewarding hard work and empowering citizens to control their own destinies.
This idea of families existing on one income has gained traction among some right-wing populists, including Blake Masters, who ran an unsuccessful Senate campaign in Arizona. They believe that the government should incentivize family-building and provide greater support for families at the federal level.
Other presidential candidates, such as Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), and Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA), have also endorsed policies that would offer more government support for families, including expanding the child tax credit.
Rep. Hinson reintroduced a package of bills in July that would not only expand the child tax credit but also extend its coverage to the time a baby is in the mother’s womb.
The proposed legislation would increase the child tax credit to $4,500 for children aged 5 and under and $3,500 for those over 5 years old. It would also provide retroactive benefits for the time a child spends in the womb.
“The Providing for Life Act charts the policy course for a culture of life in America — it is about valuing life at every stage and making critical investments in the long-term well-being of families,” Rep. Hinson stated.
As the conversation around supporting families continues to gain momentum, Gov. DeSantis’s call for men to provide child support to pregnant women adds another dimension to the ongoing pro-family dialogue.
