Many shot nationwide during violent Labor Day weekend.

Violent Labor Day Weekend Sees Dozens Shot Across the Country

Over the past weekend, cities across the country experienced a surge in gun violence, leaving many people injured and ⁤several dead.⁤ The three-day holiday weekend, when people were enjoying their time‌ off and celebrating, turned into a nightmare in at least seven cities.

Chicago: The Epicenter of ‌Gun Violence

Chicago was hit the hardest, with⁤ at least 41 people shot and ‍eight fatalities. Among the victims was a six-year-old boy who was shot in‌ the thigh‍ inside ⁤his own home. Another tragic incident involved⁣ a⁣ teen boy who was⁣ shot in the head on the city’s South Side. Both cases remain unsolved, and detectives are actively investigating.

“It’s ⁤happening over and over, right here, in this area,”⁢ said⁣ Brad Olvey, the cousin of one of the⁣ victims. ⁣”I’ve been ‍here for almost 20 years. And it’s ‍getting worse.”

Other Cities Affected

Atlanta witnessed 15 shootings, resulting ⁢in six deaths. Kansas City saw four ⁤people killed in unsolved cases. Baltimore is investigating seven shootings that claimed the lives of ‌at ⁣least two individuals. In New York City, ⁣three people ‍were shot‌ near a parade⁢ route, ‌with one fatality. Philadelphia had two shootings, including‌ one involving an 80-year-old who is in critical condition. Memphis experienced three shootings, leaving four ⁢people, including a 17-year-old, in critical condition.

A‌ Disturbing Trend

Unfortunately, this surge in violence during summer holidays is not uncommon. Labor Day, the Fourth of July, ‌and Memorial Day often bring an increase in gun violence, particularly in major cities. Last⁣ year’s ‍statistics were even ⁤more⁢ alarming, with higher numbers of ‌injuries and ‌deaths in Chicago ‌and Philadelphia.

While some major cities have seen a decrease in gun violence compared to the peak of the pandemic in 2021, overall violent crime remains elevated above pre-pandemic ⁣levels. Gun assaults, aggravated assaults, and robberies have‍ all seen increases in‍ the first half of this year compared to 2019.

Additionally, cities ‌are grappling with other crime trends, such as car theft, robbery, and organized shoplifting.
