Biden’s HHS urges reclassification of marijuana as less risky.
Assistant Secretary for Health Calls for Reclassification of Marijuana
Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine has made a bold move by urging the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to reclassify marijuana as a lower-risk drug. This decision could have significant implications for the legal status of cannabis across the nation.
In a letter to DEA Administrator Anne Milgram, Levine cited a recent review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended that marijuana, currently classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, be downgraded to a Schedule III substance.
Schedule I drugs, such as heroin, are highly addictive and have no recognized medical benefits. On the other hand, Schedule III drugs have a lower potential for abuse compared to Schedule I or II substances, although they may still lead to moderate physical dependence or high psychological dependence, according to the DEA.
President Biden’s Support for Marijuana Reform
In October 2022, President Joe Biden took a significant step towards marijuana reform by issuing a blanket federal pardon for individuals with simple possession charges at the federal level. He also encouraged state governors to follow suit.
Furthermore, in the same executive order, President Biden called upon Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Attorney General Merrick Garland to initiate a review process for the scheduling classification of cannabis. This review aims to advance federal drug policy and potentially pave the way for further changes in marijuana legislation.
