Historically black university narrowly avoided shooter before ‘racially motivated’ attack.
Edward Waters University Stands Strong Against Gunman
Edward Waters University, a historically black college, demonstrated resilience and bravery when they turned away the Jacksonville gunman on the day of his mass shooting.
The shooter, described by police as a white man in his 20s, approached an on-campus security officer but refused to identify himself. In response, the officer calmly asked the man to leave, which he did “without incident,” according to the school.
Protecting the Community
However, tragedy struck shortly after when the gunman carried out a shooting at a nearby Dollar General store, located in a predominantly black neighborhood in Jacksonville. The devastating incident claimed the lives of two men and one woman. The gunman, armed with a Glock handgun and an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle, had even painted a swastika on the weapon. He was also wearing a bullet-resistant vest.
As the chaos unfolded, students at Edward Waters University were kept safe inside their dormitories as a precautionary measure. The school released a statement assuring that no students or faculty were involved in the incident.
A Racially Motivated Crime
Law enforcement later confirmed that the mass shooting was a “racially motivated” crime. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters expressed in a news conference that the gunman had a deep-seated hatred towards black people.
Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) condemned the shooter, referring to him as a “scumbag” who chose to take his own life rather than face the consequences of his actions. The governor emphasized that the shooter had taken the coward’s way out.
The severity of the incident prompted the FBI to launch a federal civil rights investigation.
