Friend of Alex Murdaugh Admits to Assisting in Theft from Deceased Maid’s Family

KINGSTREE, S.C.—Convicted murderer⁢ Alex Murdaugh’s old college buddy pleads guilty ‌to helping steal millions of dollars

In a shocking turn of events, Cory Fleming, a former attorney and close friend of convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh, has pleaded guilty to a second set of charges. These charges involve ⁢assisting Murdaugh in ‌stealing millions of dollars of ‍insurance settlements from the sons of his deceased ⁢housekeeper.

Fleming, 54⁢ years old, ‍entered his guilty plea to 23 state charges on Wednesday. However, his sentencing ⁢has‍ been postponed until a September hearing, where prosecutors are expected to request a longer prison ⁢term than the nearly four-year sentence he received for similar⁣ federal charges earlier this month.

During his ‌federal sentencing, Fleming admitted that he was aware of Murdaugh’s intentions to steal from ⁤the family of his housekeeper, who ‌had tragically passed ⁣away in 2018 after ⁢a‍ fall at the Murdaugh residence. However, Fleming claimed that he believed the theft would amount ‌to $100,000, not the staggering sum ⁣of over‍ $4 ⁣million.

Prosecutor Creighton Waters argued ⁣that unless Fleming was “the⁢ dumbest man alive,” he‍ must have known the extent of Murdaugh’s ⁢plans. ⁤U.S. ⁤Judge Richard ‍Gergel, ‌who sentenced Fleming to 46⁣ months ‌in prison for the federal charges, expressed his belief that the state charges should not result in additional prison time.

However, South Carolina ⁢Circuit Judge Clifton Newman, who previously ⁣sentenced ‍Murdaugh to life in prison, has the discretion to deviate from‍ Gergel’s recommendation during ⁢Fleming’s state⁤ sentencing on September 14.

Fleming, who has surrendered his law license in both Georgia‍ and South Carolina, acknowledging his dishonorable actions,⁣ is the second associate of⁤ Murdaugh to be ⁢ordered ‍to ‌prison. The investigation into Murdaugh’s life began‌ in June 2021⁢ after the murders of⁢ his wife ⁤and son, and banker ⁤Russell Laffitte was⁢ recently sentenced to⁤ seven years for his involvement in the theft of settlement ‍money. Laffitte is currently appealing ⁣his conviction and sentence.

While Fleming admits to knowing that Murdaugh was involving him in illegal activities, he claims that he was unaware of the full extent of his friend’s depravity.

Murdaugh himself still⁤ faces over ‌100 charges in both state and federal ‍courts, ranging from tax⁣ evasion⁣ and ⁤embezzlement⁢ to ⁣drug trafficking and attempted‍ murder. Judge Newman has scheduled a hearing to address the status of these cases on the same ‍day as Fleming’s sentencing.

In the⁣ case‍ involving Fleming,⁣ the victims were ⁢Gloria Satterfield and her two sons. Satterfield ‌had been a loyal employee of ⁢the Murdaugh family⁤ for over 20 years, taking care‍ of their home and children. Murdaugh had promised to support ‍her sons, ⁣who were‍ young‍ adults at⁢ the ⁢time.
