Five people in Florida die from ‘flesh-eating’ bacteria.
Deadly “Flesh-Eating” Bacteria Claims Lives in Florida
Tragedy strikes as five individuals in Florida have succumbed to an infection caused by the rare and notorious “flesh-eating” bacteria known as vibrio vulnificus. This deadly bacterium thrives in saltwater and marsh environments, posing a significant threat to those who come into contact with it.
The Florida Department of Health has reported a total of 26 cases across 17 counties, a decrease compared to the 74 cases and 17 deaths recorded in 2022. However, the severity of this infection cannot be underestimated.
Public Health Concerns
Not limited to Florida, vibrio vulnificus has also claimed lives in other states. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York recently issued a public health warning following a confirmed death due to vibriosis. Additionally, three deaths in Connecticut this summer have been attributed to this disease.
The Cleveland Clinic warns that vibrio vulnificus causes the most severe form of vibriosis. Its symptoms, including fever, chills, vomiting, and diarrhea, can easily be mistaken for other illnesses, making early detection challenging.
A Widespread Issue
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that vibriosis affects approximately 80,000 individuals annually in the United States. However, only a small fraction, ranging from 100 to 200 cases, can be attributed to vibrio vulnificus.
It is important to note that certain strains of vibrio vulnificus can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, a severe infection that causes the flesh surrounding open wounds to deteriorate. This horrifying consequence has earned the bacteria its infamous “flesh-eating” nickname.
Extra precautions should be taken by individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or those with chronic conditions, when near saltwater bodies. Additionally, it is crucial to avoid consuming undercooked shellfish or seafood, as they can be potential sources of infection.
The Florida Department of Health has not disclosed the ages of those affected or deceased from vibriosis this year. However, it is worth mentioning that the victims in New York and Connecticut were all over the age of 60.
