White House warns: Trump’s tariffs mean ‘increased prices and inflation’
The Biden White House Opposes Trump’s Proposed 10% Tax on Foreign Imports
The Biden White House has strongly opposed former President Donald Trump’s suggestion of implementing a 10% tax on all foreign imports. They argue that such a tax would increase costs for lower- and middle-income Americans.
Recently, Trump announced that if he were elected in 2024, he would automatically impose a 10% tariff on all foreign imports. This proposal has faced criticism, even from some Republicans.
Trump’s Plan and its Impact
“When companies come in and they dump their products in the United States, they should pay, automatically,” Trump stated. “I do like the 10% for everybody.”
White House officials have expressed concerns that Trump’s plan would reverse the economic progress achieved under President Joe Biden’s administration.
“President Biden’s top priority is to protect the higher wages, lower costs, and progress against global inflation he’s delivering for middle-class families,” said White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates. “President Biden strongly opposes plans to hurt hardworking families with higher prices and higher inflation.”
Bates also emphasized the importance of bringing jobs back to America and addressing trade abuses committed by countries like China.
Trump’s Tariffs on China
During his presidency, Trump implemented heavy tariffs on China, which played a role in the Phase One trade deal signed just before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
Although President Biden promised to review the previous administration’s China policies, he has not made any changes to Trump’s baseline taxes, despite China’s failure to meet the commitments outlined in the trade deal.
Overall, the Biden White House remains committed to protecting middle-class families and promoting economic growth while opposing measures that could hinder progress.
