Sullivan claims Ukraine war isn’t at a standstill.
Russia’s War in Ukraine: Not a Stalemate, Says Biden’s National Security Adviser
According to President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Russia’s war in Ukraine is far from a stalemate. In a recent statement, Sullivan acknowledged that there is ongoing “attacking and defending” happening on both sides along an extensive front line.
However, he emphasized that Ukraine has been defending itself effectively against Russian offensive maneuvers in the northeastern part of the country. At the same time, Kyiv is making incremental advances in the southeast.
Ukraine’s Counteroffensive and Strategic Goals
Ukrainian forces are currently pushing from the town of Robotyne towards the strategic city of Melitopol. Their objective is to sever Russia’s land bridge from the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. This would be a significant development in Ukraine’s counteroffensive.
The Institute for the Study of War has reported that Ukrainian forces have made “tactically significant gains” in and east of Robotyne. These gains are crucial because advancing past the densest parts of Russian minefields would be possible if they continue their progress.
Continued Support and Aid
The United States has provided approximately $43 billion in military aid to Ukraine. While the administration has been slow to meet some of Ukraine’s more advanced requests, there is bipartisan support in Congress for aiding Ukraine militarily.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has assured Denmark and the Netherlands that the United States will expedite the approval of transfer requests for F-16 fighter aircraft. However, it is unlikely that the F-16s will be on the battlefield this year.
Sullivan expressed confidence in Congress’s continued support for Ukraine, despite dissenting voices within both parties. President Biden has requested an additional $24 billion from Congress to boost military assistance in Ukraine.
“There are strong Republican as well as Democrat voices advocating for continued financial support to Ukraine,” Sullivan stated. “We believe that the support will be sustained even if there are some dissident voices on the other side of the aisle.”
The House Freedom Caucus, which has the ability to influence GOP legislation, has expressed opposition to providing a ”blank check” for Ukraine in any supplemental bill.
Despite these challenges, the situation in Ukraine remains dynamic, with both sides engaged in active conflict and Ukraine making strategic gains against Russian forces.
