Biden’s DOJ sues Abbott over border buoy removal.

AUSTIN, Texas ‌— Justice Department Challenges Gov. Abbott’s Border Security Installation in Federal Court

The Justice Department is ⁤set to appear in federal ‍court on Tuesday to argue ‍against the legality ⁢of Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest ⁣border security measure. The installation ⁣of a string⁣ of buoys in the Rio Grande is being ‍contested by the Biden‌ administration, who claim that it obstructs a ⁤U.S. waterway.

Immigrant Advocates Rally ⁤Outside Courthouse

Prior to the hearing, immigrant advocates ‌gathered outside the courthouse to show their support for the ‌Biden administration’s stance.

The ⁤Biden administration initially requested Abbott to remove the buoys on July 20, but the ⁢governor refused and⁢ defiantly stated, “Texas will see you in ⁤court, Mr. President.”

The Department of⁤ Justice filed⁢ a lawsuit against Abbott in late July, arguing that the buoys violated the Rivers ⁤and Harbors Act, which prohibits the obstruction of U.S. waterways. The DOJ has⁤ also asked Judge ⁢David Ezra, a Reagan appointee, ‍to prevent the ‌state from installing any additional buoys.

“Texas’s deployment of the Floating Barrier has caused significant and ongoing harm‌ to the United States’ foreign relations ⁤with Mexico,” the DOJ wrote in a filing on ‌July 26. “Mexico has specifically asserted that Texas’s actions contravene various treaty obligations and‍ has raised humanitarian concerns regarding possible loss of life to persons swimming ‍in the Rio Grande.”

House ‌Republicans from Texas have rallied ⁣behind Abbott, placing blame on President Joe Biden for the influx of 6 million noncitizens attempting to enter‍ the U.S. without permission since he took office.

Republicans, including Abbott, argue that Biden has failed to protect the country, justifying Texas’s actions.

“It’s⁢ one thing that the ⁢federal government has refused⁤ to secure the border ⁣and Texas has had to spend so much money,” said Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) during⁣ a press conference on July 27. “It’s another thing when they actually get in our way and tell us we have ‍to stop ⁢securing our border.”
