For Delaware SNAP households, the August payments will conclude on Wednesday. These payments are distributed from the second of the month until the 23rd, ensuring that families have access to essential nutrition throughout the month.
Who Receives SNAP Benefits?
Approximately 118,800 people, which accounts for 12% of Delaware’s population, receive food stamps. The average payment per household member per month is $175. The amount of assistance varies based on the size of the household.

Qualifying for SNAP
To qualify for SNAP, a household’s gross monthly income must not exceed 200% of the federal poverty level. For example, a single-person household cannot make more than $2,266 monthly, while an eight-person household cannot make more than $7,772 monthly.
Using SNAP Benefits
SNAP payments are loaded onto a Food First card, Delaware’s version of an electronic benefits transfer card. This card functions like a debit or ATM card and can be used to purchase essential groceries such as bread, eggs, fruits, and vegetables, as well as nonalcoholic drinks. However, it cannot be used for prepared foods, household items, or pet food.
It’s important to note that the funds on the Food First card do not expire as long as the card remains in regular use. Recipients can easily check the amount on their EBT cards by referring to their last grocery receipt.
