Journalist tries EV for a week, now prefers gas-powered cars.
A Journalist’s Electric Vehicle Experiment: Why She’s ‘Totally Sold on Gas-Powered Cars’
A journalist recently embarked on a week-long experiment, renting an electric vehicle (EV) to see if it could change her perspective. However, her experience led her to a surprising conclusion: she’s now “totally sold on gas-powered cars.”
The journalist, Stella Morabito, shared her story on The Federalist. She and her husband considered renting a Tesla for their trip to the Seattle area, as neither of them had ever driven an electric vehicle before. The price difference between a long-range Tesla Model 3 and a standard gas-fueled vehicle was minimal, making it an appealing option.
However, after a full week of test-driving the Tesla, Morabito came to a firm conclusion: EVs are not for her. One of her main concerns was “range anxiety,” the fear of running out of battery power during a drive and being stranded without a charging station nearby. She found that the Tesla’s battery drained faster than expected, confirming her worries about range limitations.
Another issue she encountered was the constant search for charging stations and the lengthy time it took to recharge the vehicle. This led to concerns about personal safety, as they often had to wait for extended periods in unsupervised locations. Morabito also highlighted the distraction caused by using the touch screen system while driving to find charging stations, which contradicts the common safety advice of not texting and driving.
Even the windshield wipers posed a problem. They were supposed to be automatic, but Morabito had to manually turn them back on after they were turned off to save power. This added to the distractions while driving.
Furthermore, Morabito discovered that some charging stations were as expensive as refueling a gas-powered car, negating the perceived cost savings of EVs.
In conclusion, Morabito stated, “But pigs will fly before I buy an EV based on my Tesla experience/experiment. This conclusion is not based on a one-hour test drive but on an entire week of driving in an EV-friendly part of the country… But all in all, it was too much hassle and too much anxiety. I’m now totally sold on gas-powered vehicles.”
Similar Experiences and Realizations
Morabito is not alone in her conclusions. Ford CEO Jim Farley also had a reality check when he took a long trip in one of his company’s top EVs, the F150 Lightning. He found charging the truck to be challenging and emphasized the importance of fast charging.
Other journalists have also faced challenges with EVs. One journalist’s truck ran out of battery power, leading to complications in recharging and even towing the vehicle. Another gas-powered cars.”>journalist experienced reduced driving distance due to winter weather and the need for heating, which required more frequent recharging.
Additionally, the idea of using EVs to power homes during power outages was found to be costly and impractical, with installation expenses reaching $18,000.
These real-life experiences are debunking the myths surrounding EVs and challenging the claims made by government supporters and car manufacturers. As a result, many individuals are opting for gas-powered cars over electric vehicles.
