Virginia school district unfazed by ‘controversy’ over inclusion of anti-‘woke’ books in libraries.
The Board of Spotsylvania County Public Schools Approves Book Donations
The board of Spotsylvania County Public Schools in Virginia recently made an exciting decision by approving a variety of book donations. One of the donors is Brave Books, a Christian-based book publisher. This news, however, has sparked controversy among activists who believe the school board should focus more on promoting LGBT content in school libraries.
Creating Controversy with Wholesome Books
When asked about the uproar, Spotsylvania County Superintendent Mark Taylor expressed his lack of surprise, given the current state of the world. On the other hand, Brave Books CEO Trent Talbott couldn’t help but laugh during a radio interview, admitting that he enjoys creating “controversy” by publishing wholesome books. These books will soon find their way into Spotsylvania school libraries following the recent vote.
Donated Books and the Debate Over Content
The Virginia school board has accepted a range of book donations for school libraries, including the entire collection from Brave Books. Some of the titles donated by this Christian publisher are “Little Lives Matter” and “Elephants Are Not Birds.” The decision to include these books stemmed from a months-long debate within the school board regarding age-appropriate content in libraries.
Talbott explained that frustrated parents were the driving force behind this move, as they were concerned about the content available to their children. Superintendent Taylor emphasized that the school district aims to adhere to Virginia law regarding ”moral instruction” and provide students with more positive content.
Advocating for Values-Based Books
Talbott expressed his confusion over why some adults are advocating for pornographic and inappropriate materials in school libraries. He is thrilled that Spotsylvania is adding his values-based books to their libraries, as he believes that both adults and children find graphic books disturbing by nature.
Superintendent Taylor hopes that other school districts will follow their lead in prioritizing a “moral education” and offering appropriate reading selections to students.
Brave Books recently gained media attention when former Growing Pains actor Kirk Cameron held book readings at public libraries. These events were met with protests due to Cameron’s Christian views.
Spotsylvania has also recently endorsed Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) new model policies, which protect the requirement of school activities and student participation based on the sex assigned at birth, rather than gender identity.
