Kayleigh McEnany believes Trump’s debate decision provides Biden with an excuse, calling it a major political mistake.
Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Trump’s decision not to attend the first Republican primary debate
Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany believes that former President Donald Trump’s choice to skip the first Republican primary debate was a “political miscalculation.” Speaking on Fox News, McEnany argued that this decision would work in President Joe Biden’s favor, providing him with an excuse to avoid a debate with Trump. She also pointed out that by not showing up, Trump would allow his rivals to criticize him without giving him the opportunity to defend himself.
Importance of the center podium
“You never want to let someone else stand in that center podium,” McEnany emphasized. She highlighted that the first GOP debate would likely have the largest audience of any Republican event this year, possibly even the largest audience ever. By not attending, Trump would be giving up the center stage to another candidate, granting them more time to share their stories. Additionally, McEnany stressed that during the two-hour debate, Trump would face attacks even if he wasn’t present, and no one could respond to those attacks better than Trump himself, as he is skilled at countering them.
Potential impact on Biden’s decision to debate
McEnany also mentioned reports suggesting that Biden may not want to debate and speculated that he could use Trump’s absence as a reason not to participate. “You are giving Joe Biden a card to say, ‘I’m going to use the Trump debate standard and not show up because I’m so ahead in my internal polls. I’m just not coming,'” she explained. This would provide Biden with an opportunity to avoid the debate, using Trump’s decision as justification.
Trump’s Republican opponents, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Tim Scott, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Gov. Doug Burgum, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, will be participating in the debate on Wednesday.
