‘Sound of Freedom’ Investors Strike Gold with Massive Box Office Payout
Investors in the marketing budget for “Sound of Freedom” saw a 20 percent return
According to a media release from Angel Studios on Wednesday, investors in the marketing budget for the film “Sound of Freedom” have received a 20 percent return on their investment.
“6,678 Angel Guild members have now received $1.20 for every $1 they invested into the launch budget” for the film, according to the release.
In less than six weeks, “Sound of Freedom” has become the surprise hit of the 2023 summer, surpassing both “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning — Part One” with a box office revenue of nearly $175 million.
A Film Exposing the Darkness of Child Trafficking
Described as a true story film that exposes the darkness of child trafficking, “Sound of Freedom” follows a federal agent who saves a boy from traffickers but must risk his life to free the boy’s captive sister from a fate worse than death. The film’s distributor shares this information on the film’s website.
The film sheds light on the very real problem of human trafficking, particularly the sex trafficking of children. However, the director clarifies that some of the conspiracy theory-related themes associated with ”Sound of Freedom” are not actually present in the film.
Director Alejandro Monteverde expressed his disappointment in the connections made between the film and Q Anon conspiracy theories. He emphasized that the film does not contain any conspiracy theories or related symbols.
“If you’re telling me that there are all these conspiracy theories in the film, terminologies, that I’ll see symbols of pizza and the names Q or Z, or whatever — no. There’s none of that,” Monteverde told The Los Angeles Times.
Monteverde also shared his admiration for lead actor Jim Caviezel, who plays a crucial role in the film. Caviezel’s passion for the subject matter and personal connection to it made him the perfect fit for the part.
“When I was casting, I was looking for someone very passionate about the subject matter. It’s like if you do a movie about global warming, you don’t want the actor who shows up in a Hummer. You look for the actor that cleans up plastics on the beach,” Monteverde said.
“When I first had dinner with Jim, I saw how close to his heart was this thing,” he added. “He himself adopted three of his children from China. I don’t want to talk about his private life, but this theme was very close. His conviction to want to shine a light on this was so deep that he got emotional. The first time I met him, he was crying.”
According to Deadline, “Sound of Freedom” is set to be released internationally, starting with South Africa, and will later open in 20 more overseas territories, including Mexico and Colombia.
Angel Studios Pays Back Investors
Angel Studios, the platform and studio behind “Sound of Freedom,” has paid back the crowdfunding investors who supported the film’s marketing budget. The investors have not only received their original investment but also a 20% profit.
“6,678 Angel Guild members have now received $1.20 for every $1 they invested into the launch budget for SOUND OF FREEDOM, and we are thrilled to be able to get funds back to them in three months,” said Neal Harmon, CEO of Angel Studios.
The film is based on the true story of former government agent Tim Ballard, who rescued a little girl from sex traffickers in the Colombian jungle and went on to save many more. With a box office revenue of over $172 million since its release on July 4, “Sound of Freedom” continues to be screened in over 2,000 theaters after 5 weeks.
