Barr: Trump J6 indictment reveals just the beginning.
Former Trump Attorney General Weighs in on Federal Grand Jury Charges Against Trump
Former Trump Attorney General William Barr recently shared his thoughts on the federal grand jury charges brought against former President Donald Trump. These charges stem from allegations that Trump attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The 77-year-old former president now faces multiple felonies, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Insights from Barr
In a recent interview on CNN, Barr discussed the complexities and potential issues surrounding the case against Trump. While acknowledging that it is a “legitimate case,” he also expressed concerns about the slippery slope of criminalizing legitimate political activity.
Barr also pointed out that the Department of Justice may face challenges in convincing the public of the case’s fairness, especially considering the perceived mishandling of the Hunter Biden investigation by prosecutors.
Addressing the argument that Trump was exercising his First Amendment right, Barr disagreed, stating that the indictment does not attack Trump’s freedom of speech. He emphasized that entering into a conspiracy is not protected by the First Amendment, as all conspiracies involve speech and all fraud involves speech.
Regarding Trump’s reliance on attorneys like John Eastman, Barr expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the defense of advice of counsel. He suggested that if Trump were to take the stand, he would likely do serious damage to himself due to inconsistencies in his past statements.
Cautioning against premature judgments, Barr urged people to wait for more information, as the indictment only reveals the tip of the iceberg. He also believed that special counsel Jack Smith likely possesses additional evidence that has not yet been presented.
Lastly, Barr shared his personal opinion that Trump knew he had lost the 2020 presidential election based on public comments from his top outside political advisers at the time.
