Donald Trump indicted again, pleads not guilty once more.
Donald Trump Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges
Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday to four federal charges brought by special counsel Jack Smith. The charges allege that Trump coordinated with co-conspirators in an attempt to subvert the 2020 presidential election.
Trump made his plea at his arraignment, which took place just two days after a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., voted to bring four felonies against him. The charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights, as stated in the 45-page indictment.
Arriving at the Courthouse
Trump traveled by plane from his home in Bedminster, New Jersey, and landed in Washington, D.C. He entered the E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse through an underground entrance at around 3:15 p.m. Sporting his signature blue blazer and red tie, he appeared in the courtroom at approximately 3:50 p.m.
Inside the courtroom, 11 reporters were seated in the back rows, while U.S. marshals and Secret Service agents stood past a wooden barrier near a table closer to the judge’s desk.
Trump sat with his hands folded on top of a table, engaging in frequent, brief conversations with his defense team.
The Arraignment Process
U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya presided over the arraignment. She began by reading the charges against Trump and ensuring he understood his rights.
When asked to state his full name, Trump replied, “Yes, your honor. Donald J. Trump. John.”
Trump stumbled when asked to state his age, saying, “Seven-seven. 77.”
The judge then inquired if he had taken any medications or anything that would impair his ability to respond, to which he replied, “No, I have not.”
Outside the courthouse, Save America PAC attorney Alina Habba delivered remarks condemning the case just minutes before the arraignment. She referred to it as a “deflection” from investigations into the Biden family’s business dealings and presented a timeline of dates to highlight how the Trump indictments seemed to overshadow key moments in the Biden investigations.
