An LGBTQ Center in Ohio Teaches Children the “Fundamentals of Drag”
An LGBTQ center in Ohio, partially funded by county taxpayers, is offering a unique and engaging opportunity for children as young as 11. The Colors+ Youth Center, located just 15 miles from Cleveland, welcomes kids aged 4 to 17 and is run by licensed professional mental health counselors.
Drag Tutorials for Creative Expression
In collaboration with Drag Queen Story Hour Cleveland, the Colors+ Youth Center hosts monthly drag tutorials on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Led by a local drag performer, these sessions teach children the fundamentals of drag, including makeup, costume design, and performance. This safe and affirming environment allows youth to creatively express themselves in an age-appropriate way.
Funded by Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, this program is made possible through the support of the community.
The Colors+ Youth Center receives funding from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, one of the largest local public funders for arts and culture in the nation. With an annual investment of nearly $12 million, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture supports numerous organizations and programs that bring arts and culture to life in Cuyahoga County.
In July, the Colors+ Youth Center celebrated the election of one of its board members as President of the Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (OACES). This achievement highlights the center’s commitment to providing quality mental health services and support to the community.
A Message of Inclusion
Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, the Colors+ Youth Center took to Facebook to express their stance on discrimination. They emphasized that denying services to anyone based on who they are goes against the beliefs of the majority of Americans, including business owners.
The Colors+ Youth Center is dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all young individuals, fostering creativity, self-expression, and acceptance.
