Prominent Scientists Call for Retraction of Influential COVID-19 Origin Paper
Leading scientists are demanding a full retraction of a highly influential paper on the origins of COVID-19 that downplayed the lab leak theory. This paper, titled “The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2,” was published in March 2020 in the journal Nature Medicine and was praised by Dr. Anthony Fauci.
The paper claimed that COVID-19 did not come from a lab, despite private doubts from the authors themselves. However, recently revealed emails from early 2020 show that both Fauci and the authors suspected a lab leak as a possible cause of the virus.
A total of 47 scientists and STEM professionals have signed an open letter to Nature Medicine, calling for the retraction of the paper. They argue that the paper is “scientific fraud” and should be withdrawn or retracted.
Among the signers of the retraction letter are experts from prestigious institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Oxford, and the University of California, Irvine.
The authors of the COVID-origin paper agreed to downplay the lab leak theory due to concerns about the potential backlash from accusing China. Private messages between the authors reveal their awareness that the paper’s conclusions were not supported by the scientific evidence.
In early 2020, Fauci had a conversation with one of the paper’s authors, Kristian Andersen, that alarmed him enough to suggest potentially involving the FBI. Andersen expressed concerns about certain features of the virus that appeared engineered.
Despite the authors’ doubts and the lack of conclusive evidence for a natural evolution explanation, the paper was published in March. Fauci even commended the authors, saying, “Nice job on the paper.” He later cited the study during a White House briefing as evidence of animal-to-human transmission.
The recent revelation that Andersen had a pending $8.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) when the study was published has raised further questions about potential conflicts of interest.
The release of unredacted emails earlier this year, following a lengthy legal battle, has shed light on the behind-the-scenes discussions and doubts surrounding the origins of COVID-19.
