‘Preppy Killer’ freed after strangling teen girl in 80s.
New York City’s Infamous “Preppy Killer” Released from Prison
Robert Chambers, known as the “Preppy Killer,” has been released from prison on parole after serving 15 years for drug charges. The 56-year-old was released from New York’s Shawangunk Correctional Facility on Tuesday, not far from the scene of his notorious crime in Central Park in 1986.
Chambers gained notoriety when he brutally strangled 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park. Dubbed the “Preppy Killer” due to his clean-cut appearance, he also earned the nickname the “Central Park Strangler.”
“I’ve been in this business for a while, and you’re the first man I’ve seen raped in Central Park,” the prosecutor told Chambers at the time.
Chambers and Levin were part of a high society social circle and had been at a bar on the Upper East Side on the night of the murder. After leaving the bar, their encounter turned violent, with Chambers beating and smothering Levin with his jacket.
Chambers changed his story multiple times but eventually claimed that he accidentally strangled Levin during “rough sex.” However, the significant difference in size between the two raised doubts about his claim.
Chambers was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was released in 2003 but returned to prison for selling drugs and resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty to drug charges in 2008 and received a 19-year sentence.
Chambers’ current whereabouts are unknown, and he will remain on parole until 2028.
