McConnell’s Press Conference Freeze, Biden Trolled Upon Return
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) momentarily freezes during press conference
During a press conference with other Republican Senate leaders, Mitch McConnell experienced a surprising moment of silence that left his colleagues concerned. McConnell, in the midst of discussing the progress on the National Defense Authorization Act, suddenly went silent for about 20 seconds, prompting his fellow senator, John Barrasso, to check on him.
Barrasso, who is also a physician, grabbed McConnell’s arm and asked if he was okay. After ensuring McConnell’s well-being, Barrasso suggested they return to McConnell’s office or if he had anything else to say to the press. McConnell and Barrasso briefly stepped away before resuming the conference.
Meanwhile, Senator John Thune took over the press conference and addressed the media. The incident caught the attention of many, with a video capturing the moment circulating on social media.

An aide for McConnell later clarified that the senator had felt light-headed and needed a moment to recover. The aide emphasized that McConnell returned to handle the Q&A session and demonstrated sharpness in his responses.

Barrasso, reflecting on the incident, expressed his concern due to McConnell’s previous hospitalization after a fall and head injury. However, he commended McConnell’s remarkable recovery and praised his leadership within the conference. Barrasso noted that McConnell answered more questions than usual, showcasing his ability to handle the press.
McConnell eventually returned to the press conference, assuring everyone that he was fine. He couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at President Joe Biden, mentioning that the president had called to check on him. McConnell humorously remarked, “I told him I got sandbagged… Gotta watch those sandbags!” This comment alluded to President Biden’s own stumble during an Air Force commencement ceremony earlier in the year.
