Princess Diana’s famous outfit up for auction, set to fetch hefty sum.

Princess Diana’s Iconic Garment⁤ Goes Up⁢ for ⁣Auction, Expected⁤ to Bring ⁢Small Fortune

A ⁣red sweater ⁤adorned with a flock ⁢of sheep ⁣worn by the young Princess‍ Diana⁣ is set to make waves⁣ at auction, with an estimated ⁣price of over‍ $50,000.

The playfully patterned wool jumper, ⁢featuring a⁣ single ⁢black⁣ sheep among a sea of white ones,⁢ takes center stage ‌in Sotheby’s online ⁢Fashion Icons‌ sale in September.

In June 1981,⁢ just after her⁢ engagement to Prince Charles, the 19-year-old Lady ⁢Diana Spencer was ⁣photographed⁣ wearing the garment⁢ at a‍ polo ⁤match.‍ This‍ moment catapulted ⁤Diana into the realm of‌ style ‌icons⁢ and ⁣made ⁢her one of⁣ the most photographed women in‌ the world. It also ⁤brought⁤ significant ⁢attention⁤ to‍ designers Sally ⁤Muir ⁤and ⁣Joanna Osborne,⁣ who ⁢created‍ the sweater for ‍their ‍knitwear label, Warm⁤ &‍ Wonderful.

Shortly⁤ after‍ the⁢ polo match, Muir and Osborne received a⁤ letter from Buckingham Palace, ⁢explaining that Diana⁣ had damaged⁤ the sweater.‍ They suspected the ⁤snagging was ⁣caused⁤ by her diamond ‌and sapphire engagement ring.‍ The original sweater was returned,‌ showing ‍damage⁤ to one⁣ sleeve. ⁢In response, ⁤a⁢ new sweater was knitted ‌and sent to‍ Diana, who was ‌later photographed wearing ‌it at⁣ an‍ event⁤ in 1983, ⁣paired with white jeans and⁣ a black ribbon‌ tie.

Some speculate that⁢ Diana was drawn to⁤ the “black sheep” pattern because she often‍ felt like an outsider⁢ in the royal family. This⁤ sentiment was‍ echoed in the ⁤recent portrayal‍ of‍ Diana⁣ by Emma Corrin in ‌season ⁢four⁣ of “The Crown,” where she⁣ sported a replica‌ of the iconic sweater.

Warm & Wonderful continues to produce a cotton version of ⁢the‍ design, which sells for ⁣190 pounds ($250). However, the original⁤ sweater⁣ was discovered by Joanna Osborne herself, forgotten in an attic earlier this year.

Cynthia⁣ Houlton, Sotheby’s global head of⁢ fashion ⁢and ‌accessories, describes the garment as “exceptional” and ⁤says it carries⁢ the essence ⁢of Princess Diana’s grace, ‌charm, and impeccable fashion ⁣sense.

The ⁤sweater, with an ⁢estimated price ‌of $50,000 to ⁣$80,000, will be showcased ⁤at Sotheby’s New ⁣York showroom from‍ Sept. 7-13. ‌Online ⁣bidding ‌opens on‍ Aug. 31⁤ and runs until Sept. 14.

It’s⁣ worth⁤ noting that⁤ the current record for ‌a piece ⁣of ⁤Diana‍ memorabilia ⁤is ⁤$604,800, achieved‍ by a ⁣Victor Edelstein-designed ballgown sold ⁤by Sotheby’s in January.
