Princess Diana’s Iconic Garment Goes Up for Auction, Expected to Bring Small Fortune
A red sweater adorned with a flock of sheep worn by the young Princess Diana is set to make waves at auction, with an estimated price of over $50,000.
The playfully patterned wool jumper, featuring a single black sheep among a sea of white ones, takes center stage in Sotheby’s online Fashion Icons sale in September.
In June 1981, just after her engagement to Prince Charles, the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer was photographed wearing the garment at a polo match. This moment catapulted Diana into the realm of style icons and made her one of the most photographed women in the world. It also brought significant attention to designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, who created the sweater for their knitwear label, Warm & Wonderful.
Shortly after the polo match, Muir and Osborne received a letter from Buckingham Palace, explaining that Diana had damaged the sweater. They suspected the snagging was caused by her diamond and sapphire engagement ring. The original sweater was returned, showing damage to one sleeve. In response, a new sweater was knitted and sent to Diana, who was later photographed wearing it at an event in 1983, paired with white jeans and a black ribbon tie.
Some speculate that Diana was drawn to the “black sheep” pattern because she often felt like an outsider in the royal family. This sentiment was echoed in the recent portrayal of Diana by Emma Corrin in season four of “The Crown,” where she sported a replica of the iconic sweater.
Warm & Wonderful continues to produce a cotton version of the design, which sells for 190 pounds ($250). However, the original sweater was discovered by Joanna Osborne herself, forgotten in an attic earlier this year.
Cynthia Houlton, Sotheby’s global head of fashion and accessories, describes the garment as “exceptional” and says it carries the essence of Princess Diana’s grace, charm, and impeccable fashion sense.
The sweater, with an estimated price of $50,000 to $80,000, will be showcased at Sotheby’s New York showroom from Sept. 7-13. Online bidding opens on Aug. 31 and runs until Sept. 14.
It’s worth noting that the current record for a piece of Diana memorabilia is $604,800, achieved by a Victor Edelstein-designed ballgown sold by Sotheby’s in January.
