Biden’s Economy and Pandemic Shutters Oldest Craft Brewer
The Oldest Craft Brewer in the US Forced to Close Amidst Challenging Times
The Anchor Brewing Company, founded in 1896, has sadly announced its closure due to the current economic conditions under President Joe Biden. This iconic craft brewer, known as the oldest in the United States, has fallen victim to the soaring inflation that has plagued the nation under the current administration.
In a statement released this week, the company expressed its deep regret in having to make this difficult decision. The New York Times reported that the combination of skyrocketing inflation and other factors left Anchor Brewing Company with no choice but to cease operations.
A Perfect Storm of Challenges
While facing a decline in sales over the past decade, the company also cited a highly competitive market, the ongoing pandemic, and its location in San Francisco as contributing factors to its closure.
Sam Singer, a spokesman for the company, explained that the pandemic dealt a significant blow to Anchor Brewing Company. With the majority of its sales coming from restaurants and bars, the closures across the country severely impacted their revenue.
“The bottom line is that Anchor ran out of money, and it ran out of time,” Singer stated.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances, the company showed compassion towards its employees by providing them with a two-month notice of the closure and offering severance packages.
A Rich History and a Phoenix Rising
The Anchor Brewing Company was established by German pioneer Gottlieb Brekle during the Gold Rush era, as reported by Axios. The company faced numerous challenges in its history, including the devastating earthquake that struck San Francisco in 1906.
“San Francisco’s flag is a phoenix rising from the ashes, and Anchor has had many phoenix moments in its history,” Singer added. “But that’s out of our hands now. We can only hope for the best.”
