US Reservists prepare for Europe following Biden’s surprise executive order.

Up to 3,000 Military Reservists to be Deployed in Europe to Support NATO During Russia-Ukraine War

In a bold move to bolster NATO’s efforts during the Russia-Ukraine war, President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to deploy up to 3,000 military reservists in Europe. This decision comes as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, aimed at ensuring the effective conduct of military operations in and around the United States European Command’s area of responsibility.

The announcement, made on Thursday, emphasizes the United States’ unwavering commitment to NATO and its defense of the eastern flank in response to Russia’s illegal and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine.

Last year, the U.S. increased its troop presence in Europe by 20,000, bringing the total number of officially based troops to approximately 100,000, according to Military.com.

Operation Atlantic Resolve Classified as a Contingency Operation

The executive order also classifies Operation Atlantic Resolve as a contingency operation, expediting the process of supplying U.S. troops in Europe with necessary equipment. Additionally, it allows for the call-up of reservists and provides them with pay equal to active-duty troops, as well as benefits for their families and dependents.

While the specific units to be deployed have not been identified, Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, director of operations for the Joint Staff, stated that the selection will depend on the requirements of the commander.

U.S. Commitment to Ukraine and the Future of Deployment

During a news briefing, Lt. Gen. Sims mentioned the presence of cluster munitions in Ukraine and the challenges posed by Russia’s air defense capabilities. He noted that the current conditions may not be ideal for deploying F-16s, but the arrival of Abrams tanks will undoubtedly make a difference on the battlefield.

As the situation evolves, the U.S. remains committed to adapting its deployment strategies to effectively support Ukraine and its allies. The deployment of reservists and the provision of additional military assets demonstrate the United States’ dedication to NATO and its mission to maintain peace and stability in Europe.
