Rep. Roy confronts FBI Director Wray on raiding pro-life activist’s home.
Rep. Chip Roy Grills FBI Director Christopher Wray Over Raid on Anti-Abortion Activist’s Home
“How on earth did Mark Houck end up having the FBI send several armed agents along with local authorities to arrest him at gunpoint?”
“Did you approve of that?”
During the House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) did not hold back in questioning FBI Director Christopher Wray about the bureau’s targeting of anti-abortion activist Mark Houck in a raid on his home.
Wray’s Response Raises Concerns
When asked about his approval of the raid, Wray insisted that decisions regarding the manner of arrests are not within his purview as the FBI director. He clarified that the raid was conducted by the FBI’s Philadelphia division.
However, Roy persisted, seeking Wray’s opinion on the appropriateness of the raid. The Texas congressman pressed Wray for an answer, but the FBI director paused and remained silent.
Unanswered Questions and Concerns
Roy continued to challenge Wray, questioning the necessity of armed FBI agents and local authorities storming a father’s home in the Philadelphia suburbs. He highlighted that the arrest occurred a year after the alleged incident and after the father had expressed willingness to appear voluntarily through his lawyer.
Despite Roy’s insistence, Wray refused to second-guess the actions of the career agents involved. This prompted Roy to remind Wray of his responsibility to protect the American people from what he described as a tyrannical FBI.
Disagreement and Debate
Wray disagreed with Roy’s characterization of the FBI as tyrannical and denied that the agents had stormed Houck’s house. However, the Republican congressman stood firm in his belief that the FBI’s actions were excessive and raised concerns about the intrusion into the lives of American families.
Time Constraints Cut Short the Debate
Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) ultimately ended the debate on the subject due to time constraints, leaving many unanswered questions and concerns lingering.
Houck, who was arrested on September 23, 2022, based on a federal indictment alleging violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, was later found not guilty in February.
