Federal Indictment Unveiled Against American-Israeli Energy Expert

In a stunning development, federal prosecutors have unsealed an indictment this week against Gal Luft, an American-Israeli energy expert who has been dubbed the “missing witness” in House Republicans’ investigation into the Biden family’s business dealings. The charges, filed in the Southern District of New York, include willful failure to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), arms trafficking, Iranian sanctions violations, and making false statements to federal agents.

Luft’s arrest took place in February while he was in Cyprus, but he managed to evade extradition after being released on bail. In a video statement obtained by the New York Post last week, Luft claimed that he had provided evidence of Biden family corruption to the FBI and DOJ in March 2019, weeks before Biden announced his presidential campaign. However, he received no response from the DOJ until his arrest earlier this year on charges of illegal arms trading, acting as an unregistered foreign agent, and lying to the FBI.

Despite spending most of his time in Israel, Luft had offered to meet with the DOJ in 2019 to hand over evidence and information regarding Hunter Biden’s dealings with CEFC, a now-defunct Chinese energy company. Luft had served as an advisor to the company during the period when Hunter and CEFC were collaborating.

The Department of Justice issued a statement alleging that Luft, who also serves as the co-director of a Maryland-based think tank, was involved in multiple international criminal schemes. According to the statement, Luft:

• Conspired with others to advance the interests of the People’s Republic of China without registering as a foreign agent.
• Attempted to broker illicit arms transactions with certain Chinese individuals and entities without the required license.
• Attempted to broker deals for Iranian oil, disguising it as “Brazilian” oil to evade sanctions.

Luft now faces charges of conspiracy to violate all three acts, actual violations of the acts, and making false statements to investigators. If convicted on all counts, he could potentially be sentenced to up to 100 years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the severity of Luft’s alleged actions, stating, “He subverted foreign agent registration laws in the United States to seek to promote Chinese policies by acting through a former high-ranking U.S. Government official; he acted as a broker in deals for dangerous weapons and Iranian oil; and he told multiple lies about his crimes to law enforcement. As the charges unsealed today reflect, our Office will continue to work vigorously with our law enforcement partners to detect and hold accountable those who surreptitiously attempt to perpetrate malign foreign influence campaigns here in the United States.”
