U.S. Women’s Soccer Star Megan Rapinoe Supports Transgender Athletes

U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe is making headlines once again for her unwavering support of transgender athletes. In a recent interview, Rapinoe expressed her full support and welcome for transgender athletes to join the U.S. Women’s National Team, even if it means replacing a biological woman.

“Absolutely,” Rapinoe stated confidently. As a two-time Women’s World Cup winner, she firmly believes in inclusivity and equality in sports.

Challenging Transphobia

Rapinoe also addressed the transphobic arguments often used against transgender athletes. She emphasized, “You’re taking a ‘real’ woman’s place. That’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic.” She firmly believes that trans women are real women and should be treated as such.

“What you’re saying automatically in the argument — you’re sort of telling on yourself already — is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way,” Rapinoe explained.

Fighting for Equality

Rapinoe has been a vocal advocate for welcoming transgender athletes into women’s sports. She called on the United States to continue the fight against anti-transgender legislation, stating, “We as a country are trying to legislate away people’s full humanity.”

In April, Rapinoe joined 39 top athletes in signing a letter to House lawmakers opposing the Protection of Girls and Women in Sports Act, a popular but controversial bill. She expressed frustration with the weaponization of women’s sports, saying, “Oh, now we care about fairness? Now we care about women’s sports? That’s total bulls***.”

“Show me all the trans people who are nefariously taking advantage of being trans in sports. It’s just not happening,” Rapinoe added.

A Farewell and Gratitude

Rapinoe, who is 38 years old, announced that this will be her last appearance at the Women’s World Cup. She plans to retire at the end of the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League season. Reflecting on her career, she expressed gratitude for being able to go out on her own terms.

“I’m just really grateful to be able to do it in this way,” Rapinoe said. “I understand that it is incredibly rare for athletes of any stature to be able to go out in their own way, on their own terms, at the time that they want, in a way that feels really peaceful and settled for them.”

As Rapinoe continues to make her mark on and off the field, her support for transgender athletes serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and equality in sports.
