GOP gears up to reclaim Texas House seat post-2022 defeat.
Former Texas Republican Rep. Mayra Flores Considers Reclaiming House Seat
Former Texas Republican Rep. Mayra Flores is gearing up to reclaim her House seat after her loss in 2022. Flores made history as the first Mexican-born woman in the House when she won a special election, but was defeated five months later by Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX). However, a poll commissioned by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has shown that her chances of winning back the seat have significantly improved. While the NRCC is encouraging her to run again, Flores herself is still undecided.
“Politician Vicente Gonzalez’s long career of collecting a taxpayer salary without delivering for South Texas is about to come to an end. Keep an eye on this prime GOP pickup opportunity in South Texas that’s ready to be flipped red,”
– NRCC regional press secretary Delanie Bomar
In a statement shared on her Twitter account, Flores expressed that she is currently “praying about [a 2024 campaign]” and consulting with her family, friends, and supporters before making a decision.
The NRCC poll revealed that Flores is slightly ahead of Gonzalez, with 42.4% support compared to the incumbent’s 41.7%. She also enjoys stronger support among independents, with 50.2% favorability compared to Gonzalez’s 30.8%. Additionally, Flores holds an advantage in terms of favorability, with 43% of likely election voters viewing her favorably, while only 29% view Gonzalez favorably.
“TX-34 is one of the top pick-up opportunities for Republicans in America. Mayra Flores has already proven she can win, and new polling shows she remains popular.”
– Campaign memo
Democrats have dismissed the NRCC poll as “dubious” and have pointed to the 2022 election results as evidence that Flores would lose in a rematch. However, Flores has been sharing tweets highlighting the poll, including one from the NRCC that playfully says, “Vicente Gonzalez, call your office.”
Since her defeat, Flores has remained active on social media, engaging with her followers and supporters. The NRCC poll, conducted by 1892, surveyed 439 likely general election voters from May 24-26 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.67 percentage points.
