CNN is reportedly planning to stream shows on Max due to a significant drop in viewership.
Warner Bros Discovery Inc to Add Live Programming from CNN to HBO Max
Warner Bros Discovery Inc, the owner of CNN, is reportedly planning to incorporate live programming from the news channel into its cable channel Max, formerly known as HBO Max.
In an attempt to find a successful platform, CNN launched its streaming service, CNN+, earlier this year. However, the project was short-lived as it failed to attract viewers.
According to Bloomberg News, Warner Bros is now considering adding CNN programming to Max. However, this move may face challenges due to the complexities of offering news content online while pay-TV providers pay for cable channel rights.
Sources reveal that CNN already distributes live shows in Europe and other parts of the world, and the network’s top executives are exploring ways to do the same within the United States.
CNN’s Declining Ratings
CNN’s ratings have experienced a significant decline, with a 25% drop in primetime ratings compared to the previous year. In May, the network averaged just 494,000 viewers in primetime, despite being available in 80 million U.S. households.
This decline is particularly concerning as more Americans, especially young people, are cutting the cord and moving away from traditional cable TV. A recent report by PwC forecasts that pay TV will only account for 38% of U.S. households by 2027.

With the decline in viewership and the changing landscape of TV consumption, CNN’s future appears uncertain. The network has relied on cable companies paying to air its content, but if it has to stand on its own, it could face the risk of disappearing.
Furthermore, CNN is projected to see a decline in advertising revenue and has experienced noticeable drops in viewership in recent months.
So, it may be time to prepare for a world without CNN. And for many, that might be a welcome change.
