Trump sues E. Jean Carroll over defamation.
Former President Donald Trump Sues Writer E. Jean Carroll for Defamation
Donald Trump is taking legal action against E. Jean Carroll in their ongoing legal battle. Trump’s lawyers have filed a counterclaim in New York federal court, highlighting instances where Carroll accused Trump of rape. The most recent incident occurred during a TV interview, just one day after a separate case found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, but not rape.
Trump Denies Allegations
Despite Carroll’s claims, Trump, who is currently running for another term in the White House, has consistently denied the allegations of rape that she made against him in the mid-1990s. Carroll has filed multiple legal claims against Trump, including a successful sex-abuse suit that awarded her $5 million in damages last month.
Legal Battle Continues
The new counterclaim from Trump’s legal team is part of a separate defamation lawsuit filed in 2019, which is set to go to trial in January. The lawsuit seeks at least $10 million in damages. Although Trump’s previous attempt to countersue was rejected, the judge allowed Carroll to amend her complaint earlier this month with new comments from Trump denying any knowledge of Carroll and calling her allegations a “hoax and a lie.”
Response from Carroll’s Lawyer
In response to Trump’s latest countersuit bid, Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, stated that Trump’s filing is an attempt to delay accountability for his defamation of E. Jean Carroll. Kaplan emphasized that accountability is imminent and cannot be avoided.
Relief Sought by Trump
Trump’s legal team is seeking various forms of relief, including retractions, damages, and a denial of the relief sought by Carroll. The filing argues that Trump’s reputation has been significantly harmed as a result of Carroll’s claims, leading to substantial damages.
