George Santos arrested for federal fraud.
Republican Representative George Santos Arrested on Fraud Charges
Republican U.S. Representative George Santos has been arrested and charged with fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds. Despite calls for his resignation due to lying about his resume, Santos has resisted stepping down. He was taken into custody on Long Island and faces 13 charges, including making false statements to Congress.
The Alleged Scheme
The indictment against Santos details his alleged scheme to deceive supporters into donating to a company under the false pretense that the money would be used to support his campaign. Instead, he used the funds for personal expenses, including luxury designer clothes and paying off his credit cards.
U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said the indictment “seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and brazen misrepresentations.”
A History of Deception
Shortly after Santos’ election in November, it was revealed that he had fabricated almost every aspect of his personal and professional history. Among other false claims, he said he had degrees from New York University and Baruch College, worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and was Jewish with grandparents who escaped the Nazis during World War Two. Santos, who identifies as gay, also failed to disclose that he was married to a woman for several years ending in 2019.
Accountability for Dishonesty and Deception
The charges against Santos seek to hold him accountable for his alleged fraudulent schemes and repeated dishonesty. He is expected to appear in federal court in New York later today. Santos’ attorney and congressional office have not yet commented on the charges.
