California could ban Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, and Campbell’s soup over additives

CAlifornia lawmakers aRe-evaluating a law that would prohibit the sale candies such as Skittles, Pez, and Sour Patch Kids. Over additives that can cause cancer and organ damage, Campbell’s soups will also be prohibited.

Jesse Gabriel (Democratic Assemblyman) introduced the legislation. The legislation targets five additives. Three of these have been banned by European Union. The five substances in question are red dye 3, propylparaben (red dye3), brominated vegetable oil and potassium bromate.

“Californians shouldn’t have to worry that the food they buy in their neighborhood grocery store might be full of dangerous additives or toxic chemicals,” Gabriel made the statement in a statement. “This bill will correct for a concerning lack of federal oversight and help protect our kids, public health, and the safety of our food supply.”

The bill would also ban companies from making food with additives in California. This would apply regardless of whether the food was sold in California. Gabriel stated that Gabriel was trying to get companies to completely eliminate these ingredients from their recipes and not just in California.

Gabriel stated that the European bans on certain substances led Gabriel to choose titanium dioxide as the most prominent. The state sued the manufacturer of the ingredient last year.

A 2015 study in Germany found that the substance can build up in the liver and kidneys. Recent research from France in 2017 found that the substance could increase someone’s risk of developing cancer, inflammation, or damage to their immune system.

“We know they are harmful and that children are likely eating more of these chemicals than adults. It makes no sense that the same products food manufacturers sell in California are sold in the EU but without these toxic chemicals,” She continued.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, children who had consumed red dye 3, another substance in the mix, were more likely be hyperactive and less attentive in 2020. Another major ingredient is potassium bromate. It has been banned from Canada and Brazil due to its potential link with thyroid and kidney cancers.

The ban would also apply to jelly beans, Trident Sugar-Free gum, and certain breads in the United States. If they want to avoid these substances, consumers are advised to inspect the ingredients of their food before buying.
