US Announces New $400 Million Ukraine Security Aid Package

The Department of Defense revealed that the United States would transfer up to $400million worth of military equipment to Ukraine in March amid rising tensions. This includes high-mobility mortar systems and anti-vehicle round rounds.

“Pursuant to a delegation of authority from President [Joe] Biden, I am authorizing our 33rd drawdown of U.S. arms and equipment for Ukraine since August 2021, valued at $400 million,” Antony Blinken was Secretary of State. “This military assistance package includes more ammunition for U.S.-provided HIMARS and howitzers, which Ukraine is using so effectively to defend itself.”

Mobile rocket-launching platforms called HIMARS cost approximately $4,000,000 per unit, and each rocket costs around $168,000. The Biden administration has donated 20 of these vehicles—manufactured by Lockheed Martin—to the Ukrainian military since the start of the war.

Biden sent 143 howitzers—big artillery guns reminiscent of World War II—to Ukraine at a per-unit cost of around $5 million.

The package also includes equipment for clearing obstacles and demolition munitions. It also contains testing equipment and diagnostic equipment that can support vehicle maintenance and repairs.
