‘Never Meant To Hurt Anybody’: Macy Gray Continues Responding To Backlash, Says ‘Being A Woman’ Is ‘Something I Am Very Proud Of’
Entertainer Macy Gray continued responding to the backlash she’s facing after saying “just because you go change your parts doesn’t make you a woman,” as she explained that she “never meant to hurt anybody.”
During the 54-year-old singer’s appearance Thursday on NBC’s “Today,” the “Sweet Baby” hitmaker was pressed multiple times by host Hoda Kotb to determine whether she had any new thoughts on the matter or if her “perspective has changed” after she faced attacks from media outlets and other critics online for defending women. The initial comments were made during her conversation with Piers Morgan — about transgender athletes in female sports on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” — as The Daily Wire previously reported.
“Well I never meant to, of course, hurt anybody with what I said,” the singer told the host. “I think it takes a lot of courage to be yourself. To go out in the world and be honest about who you are. So, I think anyone who is in the LGBT community is a hero and is sets an example for all of us.”
“So, I said some things that didn’t go over well,” she added. “But my intention was never to hurt anybody. I feel bad that I did hurt some people. And I think it’s about education, it’s about conversation. And us getting to a point where we understand each other. I’ve learned a lot through this. So, I think that that was one of the reasons it might have happened. It was a huge learning experience for me.”
“You know I think you can, like I said in there, you can call yourself,” the superstar continued. “You are whoever you believe you are and no one can dictate that for you or take that away from you.”
The host then pressed the “I Try” hitmaker once again to get what must’ve been a different answer when she asked Gray, “so has your perspective changed, do you feel?”
“I’ve learned so much,” the superstar replied. “And I think … you know being a woman is a vibe and it’s something I am very proud of. And it’s very precious to me. And I think that you, in your heart feel that that’s what you are, then that’s what you are. Regardless, of what anybody says or thinks.”
The singer appeared on Morgan’s show and said she knew her comments would be met with hate, before she stated that, “as a woman, just because you go change your parts, doesn’t make you a woman, sorry.”
“I know that for a fact,” Gray said. “Like if you want me to call you a ‘her,’ I will, ’cause that’s what you want, but that doesn’t make you a woman just ’cause I call you a ‘her’ and just ’cause you got a surgery.”
Responding to the backlash, the performer told Rolling Stone magazine in a statement Wednesday, that she has “nothing but love for the LGBTQ+ and transgender community” and that her “statement on Piers Morgan was grossly misunderstood.”
“I don’t hate anyone,” the statement added. “I respect everyone’s right to feel comfortable in their bodies and live their own truth.”
