Adam Sandler Makes It Clear Which Side Of The Oscars’ Slap He’s On: ‘Love You Buddy!’

Comedian Adam Sandler offered a show of support on Twitter for his friend and fellow comedian Chris Rock after actor Will Smith slapped him onstage at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, apparently poking fun at her baldness when he said he looked forward to seeing her in “G.I. Jane 2.” She has been diagnosed with alopecia areata, a disease that causes hair loss.

Smith, who later apologized for his response, reacted by slapping Rock across the face in full view of the crowd.

Sandler, who has known Rock since they were both teenagers, tweeted a simple statement to his friend.

Along with an advertisement for Rock’s upcoming “Ego Death World Tour,” Sandler commented simply, “Can’t wait for this. Love you buddy!”

Sandler has often spoken highly of Rock in the past as well. During an interview with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” — which was intended to be a promotional spot for his 2020 film “Hubie Halloween” — Sandler spent the first several minutes raving about Rock and how he was perfect to host the first episode of “Saturday Night Live” that was going to be shot in the studio after pandemic lockdowns shuttered nearly everything.

“Isn’t that nice that they — that [SNL producer] Lorne [Michaels] was like, ‘You know who’d be great for this time? Old Chris Rock,’” Sandler began, adding that he had spoken to Rock a couple of weeks earlier and encouraged him to do it. “I was like, ‘There’s nobody like you, Buddy.’”

“Anything he says, even in conversation, you go, ‘There’s no way I would have thought of that, ever, in my life, but that’s so on the money,’” Sandler continued. “Everything he says is so on the money, but you’re just like, ‘Wow, how did I not ever think that way? That’s incredible.’”

Sandler went on to say that he and Rock had been friends since they met doing stand-up comedy at the age of 17. A club owner had told Sandler about Rock, noting that he was out with fellow comedian Eddie Murphy and that Murphy had thought he was great.

“I was like, ‘Murphy likes somebody, not me?’ I was so upset,” Sandler joked, but he said that once they met it was like they were “tight immediately.”

Sandler concluded the bit with a story about going with Jack Nicholson and Jim Brooks to see Rock perform in Las Vegas, and throughout the show, all he kept thinking about was the fact that Nicholson and Brooks were nearly doubled over with laughter and their seats were too far back for Rock to see them.

“I was going, ‘I wish Rock could see this, man,’” he said. “Imagine getting to see Jack Nicholson and Jim Brooks thinking you’re the funniest guy on the planet.”
