Biden in 2020: I’m the Only Person in This Field Who’s Ever Gone Toe-to-Toe With Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin “doesn’t want me to be president,” former vice president and then-candidate Joe Biden claimed on February 21, 2020, as he was battling with other Democratic contenders to become his party’s presidential nominee in the 2020 elections.

The reason, Biden tweeted, was that he was “the only person in this field who’s ever gone toe-to-toe with him (Putin)”:

“Vladimir Putin doesn’t want me to be President. He doesn’t want me to be our nominee. If you’re wondering why — it’s because I’m the only person in this field who’s ever gone toe-to-toe with him.”

In its current context, going “toe-to-toe” apparently means instituting sanctions, as Biden prepares to respond to a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken is insisting that sanctions are an effective deterrent.

Russia and Putin will be hit with “some of the greatest sanctions, if not the strongest, that we’ve ever issued,” Vice President Kamala Harris said Sunday at a news conference following her meetings with NATO allies in Germany.
