A devastating car crash has claimed the lives of eight individuals, with one of them suspected to be a human smuggler.
On Wednesday, a dramatic incident unfolded on a South Texas highway as the driver of a car, suspected of transporting smuggled migrants, attempted to flee from the police. Tragically, the driver collided head-on with another vehicle, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
According to reports, the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. when the driver of a 2009 Honda Civic, trying to outrun Zavala County Sheriff’s Office authorities, made a risky maneuver to overtake a semi truck. The State Department of Public Safety (DPS) has confirmed that all occupants of both vehicles perished in the accident.
The driver of the Civic, a 21-year-old, was accompanied by five other passengers.
According to Spokesperson Christopher Olivarez, the passengers in the Civic were from Honduras.
The victims in the Equinox have been identified as a couple from Georgia.
“The driver in a Honda passenger car from Houston suspected of human smuggling was evading from Zavala (County deputies) when the driver passed an 18-wheeler in a no-passing zone,” said Olivarez.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, and the identities of the victims have not been released as authorities are prioritizing informing their families first.
