At least three children were among eight people shot in Chicago on Saturday night, with police reporting that one 7-year-old girl was killed.
Police responded to Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side after being alerted to 18 gunshot rounds in the area, Chicago Police Department officials said during a press conference Saturday via CNN.
The victims include five adults and three children, with ages ranging from 19 to 40. All the victims were taken to local hospitals, police said.
A 7-year-old girl was shot in the head and later pronounced dead, while a 1-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy were both shot multiple times. The former was taken into the hospital in critical condition,n and the latter was left with critical injuries.

“This was not a random act of violence. It was likely gang-related,” Chicago Police Deputy Chief Don Jerome said during the news conference. “Regardless of the motivation for this incident, three innocent children were struck tonight, and one of them tragically succumbed to her wounds.”
Police have not made any arrests, nor have named any suspects in the shooting as of Sunday. Jerome said on Saturday night that the investigation is “preliminary and ongoing.”
