7 GOP Reps Volunteer for Censure, GOP Conference Exit to Support Jordan as Speaker
7 Republican Reps Offer to Be Censured, Removed from GOP Conference to Get Jordan Elected as Speaker
In a bold move, Rep. Matt Gaetz took to X to propose a sacrificial offer. He and seven other Republicans who joined with House Democrats to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are willing to face censure, suspension, or removal from the Conference if it means securing votes for Rep. Jim Jordan as the 56th House Speaker.
“If the holdouts who refuse to vote for Speaker-Designate Jim Jordan would be willing to ‘vote with the team’ and elect him the 56th House Speaker, we are prepared to accept censure, suspension, or removal from the Conference to accomplish this objective,” a letter posted to Gaetz’ X account.
However, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, one of the eight Republicans, quickly distanced himself from the offer, calling it a “mistake.” Buck did not vote for Jordan in any of the three ballots for speaker.
“This was a mistake. Congressman Buck had not agreed to sign this letter and his name has since been removed. His position remains unchanged,” a spokesman for Buck said.
The chaos within the Republican Party is evident, with divisions and disagreements becoming more apparent. The unity proposed by Gaetz and his colleagues seems to be crumbling, as Buck’s refusal to support Jordan highlights.
REP. BUCK tells me: “I have not signed the letter. I’m not going to sign the letter. I am not in favor of electing Jim Jordan speaker.”
He said it was a “misunderstanding” because he “helped draft a letter during the last speaker vote.”
Despite the offer and the ongoing discussions, it remains uncertain whether Jordan can gather enough support to become the next House Speaker. Some Republicans, such as Don Bacon and Brian Fitzpatrick, have suggested that it may be time for Jordan to step aside.
“Patrick McHenry doesn’t want it, but he would be great,” Bacon told CNN.
“I think Patrick McHenry is the perfect person to just get us through the year and possibly the cycle,” Fitzpatrick said.
Will the GOP take this deal?
Despite the uncertainty, the letter emphasizes the importance of unity among Republicans and the need to support Jim Jordan. It states, “What unites us as Republicans is more important than our disagreements.” The hope for reconciliation and a shared purpose is evident.
However, the unity proposed by Gaetz and his colleagues seems to be crumbling, as Buck’s refusal to support Jordan highlights.
Considerable doubt remains as to whether Jordan can gather the necessary votes to become the next House Speaker.

What are the potential consequences of the sacrificial gesture by Rep. Matt Gaetz and other Republicans in supporting Rep. Jordan for the speaker position
He’ll do it if Jordan steps aside. It’s time to end this,” Bacon said.
Meanwhile, Rep. Liz Cheney, who has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, has indicated her support for Rep. John Katko as the next speaker.
The battle for the speaker position is not only about internal party dynamics but also about the direction the Republican Party wants to take. Jordan, a staunch conservative and ally of Trump, represents the faction of the party that believes in staying loyal to Trump’s agenda.
On the other hand, there are Republicans who believe that in order to move forward and broaden their appeal, the party needs to distance itself from Trump and adopt a more moderate stance. This internal power struggle is creating divisions and tensions within the party.
While Gaetz and the seven other Republicans offer a sacrificial gesture to support Jordan, it remains to be seen whether their offer will be enough to sway votes in his favor. Some Republicans may view this offer as a desperate move that could further divide the party and damage its credibility.
The next House Speaker will play a crucial role in shaping the legislative agenda and leading the Republican Party. It is essential for the party to unite and find a leader who can bridge the gap between different factions and bring everyone together.
The infighting within the Republican Party is a reminder of the challenges it faces in the post-Trump era. The party must navigate these internal divisions and find a way to move forward and rebuild. The choice of the next House Speaker will be a defining moment for the party and its future direction.
As the battle for the speaker position continues, it is clear that the Republican Party is at a crossroads. The outcome of this internal power struggle will shape the party’s identity and determine its path in the coming years. Only time will tell who will emerge as the next House Speaker and how the party will navigate the challenges ahead.
