67 People Arrested at Gay Wedding in Africa: ‘We Cannot Copy the Western World’
Police in Nigeria announced on Tuesday that they had detained at least 67 individuals who were celebrating a gay wedding. This mass detention is one of the largest crackdowns on homosexuality in the country, where it is illegal.
The arrests took place in Ekpan town, located in the southern Delta state, at around 2 a.m. on Monday. According to Bright Edafe, the state police spokesman, the event was a wedding ceremony between two individuals of the same sex. Edafe emphasized that Nigeria will never tolerate homosexuality.
Homosexual acts are frequently targeted in Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous country. Under the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, individuals can face up to 14 years in prison for engaging in same-sex relationships, while accomplices can be sentenced to 10 years.
The police in Delta state raided a hotel in Ekpan where the gay wedding was taking place. Initially, 200 people were arrested, but after preliminary investigations, 67 of them were detained, as revealed by Edafe during a press conference held at a police station where the suspects were being paraded.
“The amazing part of it was that we saw two suspects, and there is a video recording where they were performing their wedding ceremony,” Edafe said. “We are in Africa and we are in Nigeria. We cannot copy the Western world because we don’t have the same culture.”
Edafe reiterated that the Nigerian police cannot stand idly by while individuals openly express their sexual orientation. He made it clear that such behavior will not be allowed in Nigeria, and the suspects will face charges in court once the investigation is complete.
During a live broadcast of the suspects’ parade by the police, one of those arrested claimed that they were not attending a wedding ceremony but were at the hotel for a different engagement. Another suspect stated that he does not identify as gay and was apprehended while on his way to a fashion show.
“On my way going to the event, police attacked me and took me to the police station,” the suspect said. ”They said I have committed an offense while dressed like this, but I don’t know if cross-dressing is against the constitution of the land.”
Nigeria is among several African countries that have enacted laws criminalizing same-sex relationships. The most recent addition to this list is Uganda, where a newly signed law even carries a death penalty in certain cases.
