Six “Soldiers of Christ” Arrested After Woman Found Dead in Car Trunk
On Thursday, five adults and a 15-year-old who are part of a religious group self-described as the “Soldiers of Christ” were taken into custody on murder charges after a woman’s body was discovered in the trunk of a car parked outside a spa in Atlanta, Georgia.
The arrest warrant states that the victim was subjected to weeks of starvation and physical abuse before she ultimately died.
Eric Hyun, Gawom Lee, Joonho Lee, Juoonhyum Lee, Hyunji Lee, and an unidentified 15-year-old were all arrested in connection with the torture and murder of the woman.
The group members face charges of felony murder, false imprisonment, tampering with evidence, and concealing the death of another.
They also face multiple gang-related charges under Georgia law, which defines a criminal street gang as “any organization, association, or group of three or more persons associated in fact, whether formal or informal, which engages in criminal gang activity.”
According to detectives, Hyun is believed to have been the driver of the car where the victim was later found.
Police stated that Hyun parked the car early Tuesday and then called a cousin for a ride. Hyun was subsequently taken to an Atlanta-area hospital for unrelated injuries by a family member.
During his visit, he asked a family member to retrieve a personal item from the parked vehicle. When the family member returned to the car, they discovered the woman’s body in the trunk and immediately called 9-1-1.
The investigation led to a search warrant for a Lawrenceville residence linked to Hyun, where authorities suspect the crime took place in the basement.
Authorities believe the victim had recently moved to the United States from South Korea to join the Soldiers of Christ religious organization, which the suspects claimed to be members of.
Investigators believe they have apprehended all individuals involved in the fatal incident and are not pursuing further leads related to the religious group. They also stated that there is no apparent connection between the murder and the spa business.
The identities of the victim and the 15-year-old allegedly involved have not been publicly disclosed.
