Four students and another person were wounded at a shooting at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.
On Tuesday, a shooting occurred at Morgan’s homecoming celebration and injured five people, causing the school to go on lockdown for hours.
Early on Wednesday a press conference was held where Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the five victims, four men and one woman, are between the ages of 18 and 22.
Morgan State Police Chief Lance Hatcher said four of the people who were injured are students at the university.
According to a police release, the shooting happened shortly after the coronation of Mister & Miss Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Center while students were holding a homecoming celebration.
Worley stated that because police heard gunshots and numerous dorm windows were damaged, officials initially assumed there was an active shooter on campus and responded appropriately.
After SWAT officers cleared a building where a suspect was believed to hiding, He said the shelter-in-place order was lifted around 12:30 a.m.
Police reportedly went door to door searching for the suspect while everyone was being evacuated after being searched.
Mayor Brandon Scott (D-Md.) told the press that there is a national problem with guns.
“This is not just a Baltimore thing,” Scott said. “Any mayor in any city will tell you that we have a national problem with guns in the hands of people that should not have them, and we have to handle it in a national way.”
Scott stated that, at this moment, he does not believe the incident was racially motivated, stressing that the investigation is ongoing.
According to school President David Wilson, Morgan State’s courses will be canceled on Wednesday, and counselors will be accessible to students.
Reportedly, no arrest have been made so far and all injuries were non-threating.
