5 hospitalized in E. Coli outbreak at University of Arkansas.
Investigation Underway: E. Coli Outbreak Hits University of Arkansas
Health officials are currently investigating a concerning outbreak of E. coli food poisoning among students at the University of Arkansas. Dozens of students have reported symptoms, and shockingly, five individuals have required hospital treatment.
Sorority Members Suffer Serious Complications
Among those affected are two 19-year-old sorority members who have developed a serious complication that can potentially lead to kidney failure. Bill Marler, a renowned Seattle food safety lawyer, reviewed the patients’ medical records after being contacted by their families.
Camille Honey, a sophomore from Fayetteville, Arkansas, has been hospitalized and is currently on dialysis after both of her kidneys failed. Her mother, Kris Honey, expressed her daughter’s excruciating pain and suffering, stating, “She’s been in 10 out of 10 pain for a week. She’s been here for 11 days in serious pain and misery.”
Netflix Documentary Sparks Crucial Action
Camille Honey’s condition worsened rapidly after moving into a sorority house on campus. Her mother, having recently watched the eye-opening Netflix documentary “Poisoned,” which highlights foodborne illnesses and features Bill Marler, insisted that the emergency room staff take a stool sample. This decision proved crucial as the sample tested positive for the dangerous O157:H7 strain of E. coli.
Widespread Impact
According to officials from the Arkansas Department of Health, approximately 100 students have reported symptoms of E. coli infection. However, the exact source of the outbreak remains unclear.
